After the death of his mother he, as well as his sister, went to live with an uncle and aunt, where he remained until he reached maturity. He then learned the shoemaker's trade. He married and lived all his life near Boquet, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

They were the parents of four children, two sons and two daughters; in 1918 these children were living in Omaha, Nebraska.
