He resided on the old family homestead in Butler County, Pennsylvania. He was in the service during the Civil War for nine months as a volunteer of Company D, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Pennsylvania Regiment, and participated in seven engagements, among them the battles of Bull Run and Antietam.
