General Notes: Husband - John Shale
He received a good education, and then assisted his father in the butcher business and in farming. After the family settled in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, he took up the occupation of a wagoner on the Old Pike, and followed this business for twelve years, owning and managing four six-horse teams, hauling metal and other goods. He frequently made trips from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia. He finally abandoned the Pike and bought a farm in Cook township, Westmoreland County, and devoted his entire time and attention to the cultivation of this piece of land. His political affiliations were Democratic, and he served as school director for some time, this being the only public position which he would consent to hold. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a class leader and trustee.
