General Notes: Husband - Leverett Bissell

He completed his schooling at the age of seventeen, remaining on the Ohio farm until some time after his marriage. In 1849 he sold the homestead in Mahoning County and, settling in Perry Township, Mercer County, PA, purchased the farm of one hundred acres later occupied by his son, Francis D. He made such subsequent additions to it that his land estate eventually amounted to three hundred acres and represented one of the largest and most valuable agricultural properties in that section of Mercer County. His first years were passed amid the hard toils of a typical pioneer and amidst the cares of a growing family of children, but as his son Francis D. developed into a sturdy and willing youth his labors were lightened, both in the clearing of the land and his large dealings in live stock. In the latter branch the elder Mr. Bissell became widely known, being an extensive raiser, buyer and shipper. At his death there was no more respected or popular citizen in the county than he; but, although he had been a stanch Republican voter since the organization of the party, he had neither desired nor held public office. He retained his physical energies and his mental strength to a remarkable degree, even at the age of eighty making the round trip to his old Ohio home, not by rail but on foot. His memory was stored with interesting reminiscences, clustering largely around the first log cabin which he built when he came to Perry Township in his forty-first year. He afterward erected two residences on the homestead, both of which were destroyed by fire. [HMC 1909, 968]
