He was reared on a farm and received his early education at the common schools. He afterward attended select schools at Cambridgeboro and Meadville, PA, and in 1860 was a student at Allegheny College, Meadville. In 1861 he began the study of medicine with Dr. William J. Gamble, of Mosiertown, PA, where he remained three years. In 1864 he received his diploma from the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York, and began the practice of his profession with Dr. Gamble, of Mosiertown, the same year, remaining with him two years. In 1866 he located in Cambridgeboro, where he continued in active practice. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the K. of H. and the A. O. U. W.
