He was born in Hopewell township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and attended the common schools, also Washington and Jefferson College, retiring in his junior year on account of poor health. Afterward he took a course at the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York, from which he graduated in 1879. He immediately settled at West Middletown, Pennsylvania, where he was associated with his brother.
