He was one of a set of twins.

He left Pennsylvania and went to Michigan in 1855 and left his wife Jane and their 9 children in Pennsylvania. She came to Michigan a year later, however, he had become involved with a woman named Harriett Winn. He and Jane separated in 1858, but she was pregnant again so she left all the kids with him and Harriett except for Margaret Jane (2 yrs old), and returned to Pennsylvania. He left Hariett Winn about 1866 for another woman, and eventually married her in 1871.
