He was reared on the farm, and received a common school education. When eight years old he moved with his parents to Butler County, PA, where he lived for twenty years. After marriage, he and his wife moved, in 1838, to Sunville, Venango County, where they lived two years. They then bought a farm in Plum Township, one mile north of Sunville. They had a family of ten children, of whom eight were still living in 1879.
