He was a native of Bethlehem Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, who was of Irish extraction, and settled on the farm in Somerset Township, where he spent his later years engaged in agricultural pursuits.

He followed the vocation of farming, was a supporter of the Republican party and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
