He was born in Germany, and after coming to America they lived for a short time in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after which they came to Lawrence County, making the trip in great covered wagons. He secured a tract of timber land in Slippery Rock Township and there he passed the remaining years of his life.

He had four children with his second wife; she was a widow with two children when they were married.
