His education was such as the district schools of the locality afforded. At the early age of ten years he began learning the shoemaker's trade with his father, and after he had attained his sixteenth year gave his entire time and attention to that business.
During his boyhood, he accompanied his parents to Miles township, where he continued to work with his father until twenty-one years of age, and then established a shop of his own in Madisonburg, where he then successfully carried on business, with the exception of two months spent in Bellefonte. He owned a home in Madisonburg, and also twelve acres near the village, for which he paid $125 per acre, and twenty-seven acres of mountain land.
