He received a common school education and farmed with his father until about 1893, when he began farming on his own account. He resided in the vicinity of Irwin for more than two decades, and about 1902 located on a farm, which was just outside of the borough on the east. He held membership in the Reformed church, and his political allegiance was given to the Democratic party.
