He received a common school education and farmed until the age of thirty-five, when he learned the trade of carpenter, later taking up contracting and building, which he has followed ever since. He came to Irwin about 1887, built his present home, and has resided there continuously since that date, a period of almost twenty years. He is a member of the Reformed church, and served as a member of the church committee for twelve years. He is a Democrat in politics.
