General Notes: Husband - Israel Elias Berlin
He passed the years of his childhood and early youth on his father's farm. He attended the public schools of Export, Pennsylvania, for his education, and assisted his father with the work on the place which was situated about half a mile from Export. This work he continued until he reached the age of twenty-two years, when he became a coal miner and worked in this capacity for the Westmoreland Coal Company for the six years following. He then took up the painting business, and for nine years was engaged as a contractor in this line. It was at the end of this period that he entered another business, that of sinking and building wells, in which he has made a notable success and came to be regarded as one of the successful men of the community. In his politics Mr. Berlin was a Democrat, excepting in connection with local affairs in which he was entirely independent, voting for the man that he believed in. He never sought political office of any kind, yet for six years or more he served as auditor of Export. He was a member of Export Lodge, No. 1198, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of Export, joining this lodge at the time of its organization. Before that date he was a member of the Delmont lodge. Mr. Berlin was one of the prime movers in starting the lodge at Export and passed through all its chairs. He was also a member of the local lodge of the Knights of Malta and this too was organized by him there at Export, May 2, 1913. He passed through all the chairs of this lodge also and became past Sir Knight Commander. Mr. Berlin was also a member of the Lodge of Knights of Pythias, of Export, and passed through all the chairs, and of the Independent Order of the United American Mechanics, No. 695, of Export, of which he was secretary for one term. Another fraternity with which he was identified was that of the Knights of the Golden Eagle, being an active member of the local lodge of Export. Mr. Berlin in his religious belief was a member of the Reformed church and attended the Denmark Manor church of this denomination at Export.
