General Notes: Husband - John W. Bell
The common schools afforded him his educational privileges, and he received ample training at farm labor and in the lumber business. In 1862, having married, he purchased from his father the homestead and 400 acres of land additional. After his father's death he purchased the interest of the other heirs until he owned one-half of the remainder of the land. He erected a pleasant and commodious two-story residence, a large barn, also substantial outbuildings, and transformed the land into richly-cultivated fields. He aided his father in clearing the homestead tract and then improved other portions, clearing it of the stumps and raising in the fields excellent crops. He also built a sawmill, and did an extensive lumber business, piloting the lumber down the river every spring for thirty years. He made his last trip in 1891. His land was underlaid with a rich coal deposit, and his property was a valuable and productive one.
He was a Republican in politics until 1894, after which time he voted the Prohibition ticket. He served as postmaster at Bower.
He and his wife were members of the Baptist Church.
