He grew to manhood in Mercer County, PA, and in 1880 began clerking in the clothing house of Henlein & Bacher. In February, 1885, he became a member of the firm of Bacher, Benninghoff & Co. He was a Republican in politics, and a member of the I. O. O. F. society.
