Ernest R. Bell
OIL CITY — Ernest R. Bell, 83, of 307 First St., Fairmont, W.Va., a native of Seneca, Pa., died June 17 in his home after a long illness.
He had been a practicing attorney in Fairmont for 56 years, retiring in 1968 because of ill health.
He was born August 25, 1889, in Seneca, a son of the late Emerson A. and Jennie LeVier Bell.
He was graduated from West Fairmont High School, Fairmont Normal (now Fairmont State College) and the West Virginia University College of Law.
Mr. Bell was admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of West Virginia in 1912 and to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1921.
He served as assistant prosecuting attorney of Marion County until 1915.
Five years later, he and the late James A. Meredith formed the partnership of Meredith and Bell which became counsel in 1925 for the Monogahela Power Co.
Past president of the Marion County Bar Association, Mr. Bell was a member of the State and American Bar Associations.
On December 28, 1916, Mr. Bell married the former Ola Lee Conaway.
She survives along with one daughter, Mrs. Richard M. (Bettina) Wyman Jr. of Massachusetts and Florida; three granddaughters; one sister, Mrs. Joseph G. Ridgley of Colorado Springs, Colo., and two brothers, Homer S. Bell and Dr. Orrin E. Bell, both of Fairmont.
He was preceded in death by two brothers DeLoyd John and Dr. Clifford C. Bell.
