He and his wife were married in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and in 1805 moved to Crawford County, settling first in Mead Township, then in 1811 moving to Troy Township, where they purchased several hundred acres of timber land, a considerable portion of which they cleared.
He was a farmer and also a minister in the Methodist Church; classes were held at the Benn cabin from 1816 to 1836.
He was a soldier of the War of 1812.
