He came to America after his brother Jonathan, studied medicine at Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, and for a time traveled over the country, selling notions, but eventually, about 1836, settled at Kittanning, where he practiced medicine and had a drug store, being the second druggist at that place; later he also had a general store; he had two children.

Known as "Dr. J. K.", he learned wagonmaking, but later studied medicine and obtained his degree, engaging in practice the remainder of his life. He came to America about 1820, located at Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. He became a well-known and leading citizen of his locality; he also owned a farm.
