He was just three years of age when his mother died, and he was thereafter reared in the home of Thomas Young. He received a good common school education, and then turned his attention to farming, which he followed with great success all his life. He inherited a part of a farm, and purchased the remainder, having in all 100 acres of well improved land. He followed general farming, and made a specialty of raising Clydesdale horses.
