His boyhood was spent at school and in the occupations which appeal to youth until he entered upon his apprentice-ship to the machinist's trade, and when twenty-one years old he came to New Castle, Pennsylvania, in order to enter the Withrow & Gordon Engineering Works. He remained with that firm until it dissolved, and then went to Philadelphia, where for twelve years he was superintendent of works in which Mr. Gordon was interested, and for seven years with W. W. Lindsay & Co., of that city, as superintendent of erections. He dissolved his pleasant relations with that firm in order to come to the Pennsyl-vania Engineering Company, New Castle. The nature of his work took him all over the coun-try, even to Nova Scotia, and the larger part of his time is taken up in travel.
