His birth date is given as April 31, 1854. [HMC 1909, 942] Clearly this is an error.
When he was about five years of age, his father and mother both died within three weeks of one another, of typhoid fever which was raging at that date in the vicinity. He was then reared by Ely George, who married a cousin of Mr. Beil's father, a tinsmith by trade. Moses was permitted to attend school until eighteen years of age, then worked on a farm in Delaware Township six years, when he went to Greenville to learn the trade of a buggysmith, remaining there three years. In 1876 he engaged as fireman on the old Shenango Valley Railroad (later the Bessemer) where he continued for eight years, when he was promoted on merit to an engineer on the Erie Railroad and was in the employ of this company for twenty-four years. In political views, Mr. Beil affiliated with the Republican Party. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was also a worthy member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. [HMC 1909, 942]
