He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He served in the Revolutionary war, entering the service when about sixteen years of age.
In the year 1793 he purchased from Anthony Boly a farm in Peters township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, which was still in the possession of his descendants a century later.
