He entered the army (Civil War?) while quite young and upon his return graduated from Eastman Business School, Poughkeepsie, New York. Shortly afterward he went to Colorado where he engaged in transportation and mining business at which he was quite successful.
He was born on a farm near Whitestown, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and was a veteran of the Civil War. He was first sergeant in the Pennsylvania Cavalry, Twenty-second Regiment, Company G, and known as the Ringgold Battalion. After his discharge he went to Central City, Colorado. He was an intimate friend of the late Henry M. Teller of that city. He became proprietor of the Rocky Mountain Freight Line from Floyd Hill to Central City and Georgetown until the C. S. R. R. extended a branch to Georgetown.

She was always active in church, club and town affairs, freely giving of herself for all good causes, and besides being an enthusiastic devotee of literature, she contributed many short stories depicting her varied and interesting experiences throughout her life.
After the death of her first husband she and her son returned to Zelienople, Butler County, Pennsylvania.
