It was claimed that he was a lineal descendant of Richard Willard, Baron of the Cinque Ports, in the time of Richard II.

There is record of the will of Richard Willard, yeoman, Brenchley, England, dated September 18, 1558, proved October 24, 1558, and there is also record of Richard Willard, Horsmonden, who married (first) Catherine, buried March 11, 1559, (second) Marger, died December 12, 1608, (third) January 17, 1610, Jean Morehead, buried February 25, 1617.
