He came from Donegal, Ireland, and soon after landing upon the free shores of America he came to Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He purchased 100 acres of land in Big Beaver township, where he lived until his death, at the age of eighty-five years.

He and his wife had four sons and six daughters, John being the third child.
