He studied law with Edmund Randolph, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A highly cultured man, he enjoyed the close friendship of many distinguished people, notably that of General Lafayette, with whom he traveled during his tour of the United States; and he was groomsman at the wedding of two of the daughters of Thomas Jefferson.
