Heart attack kills driver, causes crash
A Franklin RD 4 woman suffered a fatal heart attack as she was operating a truck on Horse Creek Road in Cranberry Township early last night. The truck then rolled into the intersection and collided with a car.
Leona A. Russell, 67, of Franklin RD 4, had her 1979 Chevrolet truck stopped on Horse Creek Road at the intersection with 157 when she suffered the attack. Her truck plunged ahead into the intersection and collided with a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass operated by Walter Slye of Star Route, Oil City. Slye's vehicle was traveling east on 157 at the time.
Dr. Arnold Gold pronounced the woman dead at Oil City Hospital at 6:47 p.m., approximately one hour after the accident occurred.
Slye sustained minor injuries in the crash, was treated at Oil City Hospital and was later released.
The Seneca Rescue Squad and Seneca firemen assisted state police at the
scene.
Leona A. Russell, 68, a resident of Franklin RD 4, was born in Cranberry Township Dec. 22, 1911, a daughter of John and Florence Lesher Bell.
She and Glenn H. Russell were married Dec. 2, 1932, and he survives.
Mrs. Russell was employed for a number of years at Franklin Hospital, working as ward clerk and a nursing aid. She retired Dec. 31, 1977.
She was currently serving a term as president of the Rockland Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
Surviving along with her husband are one son, Floyd E. Russell of Franklin, and two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Betty) McAlister of Seneca and Mrs. Cletus (Ruby Jane) McCauley, Franklin; seven sisters, Mrs. Alice Kuhns and Mrs. Ruth Amore, both of Franklin, Mrs. Leonard (Margaret) Russell, Rockland, Mrs. Lawrence (Dorothy) Seyler, Van, Mrs. Inez Webber of Oil City, Mrs. Charles (Dora) Meehan, Seneca, and Mrs. Raymond (Lottie) Stormer of Warren, Ohio. Also surviving are two brothers, Norman Bell of Seneca and John W. Bell, Warren, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Meehan and Dena Hanniwalt, and an infant daughter, Caroline.
The family will receive friends at the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The funeral service will be held there at 1 p.m. Thursday, followed by interment at Rockland Cemetery.
