He was born in Ireland, where he was educated. He came to Canada in 1869 and followed farming. In June, 1872, he came to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and engaged as a laborer with the Dunbar Furnace Company at Dunbar.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church, of I. O. O. F. and K. of P.
