He was a wood turner by trade, which line of work he followed throughout the active years of his life. He was prominent in the politics of his day.

He was a slave owner of Pennsylvania.

He was a farmer and at one time owned a portion of the land on which Homestead, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, now stands.
