He was reared in Chippewa township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and succeeded to the homestead where he thereafter resided, with the exception of six years, three of which he was engaged in mercantile business in Beaver, and three spent in New Brighton in private life. He served as county auditor for one term, and justice of the peace several terms. He was a member of the Baptist church; politically he was a Republican.

He resided on the family homestead farm in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. In his early life, he was a merchant at Beaver, for three years. He was in business later at New Brighton, for three years, and then retired to the homestead farm, which he then cultivated. He served as county auditor one term, and as justice of the peace for several years.
