He remained on the home farm during boyhood, receiving a common-school education. In early life he took a trip west, but being seized with ague, did not remain, but returned east, settling in Washington County, Pennsylvania. After marriage he and his wife first made their home in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in Cross Creek township, then moved to Robinson township, and in 1872 came to Smith township, locating about one mile and a half south of Burgettstown. He was a Republican, and was often called upon to fill offices of honor and trust in his township. He was a member of the U. P. Church.
