He was born on the farm in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and lived and grew to early manhood there. He became a great favorite of his Grandfather Shaffer, with whom he loved to visit. In August, 1861, he enlisted in the army for the War of the Rebellion, as a private in Company A, Pennsylvania Roundhead Regiment, and went with the first fleet to South Carolina, on the "Ocean Queen." He died in a hospital at Beaufort, South Carolina, of pneumonia, March 13th, 1862, eighteen years, two months and nineteen days old. Some time after his death, his remains were taken to Washington and laid in the Cemetery there. A strange thing occurred in connection with his death. He wrote often to his mother and she always read his letters to his grandfather. On March 14th, she went to read a letter she had just received which was written on February 25th. When her father saw her, he asked if she had a letter from Shaffer, and added: "I had such a strange dream last night, I feared he was sick." She said, "No, he is well and cheerful." Being pressed to tell the dream, the grandfather continued: "In my dream I saw Shaffer in the stage coach, which stopped at the front door. He was the only passenger, and said he wish to speak to grandpa. I went out and Shaffer said, 'Grandpa, I thought I would take you with me,' and then said, 'Good-bye, Grandpa, I will wait another year' and the stage drove off. In the dream I stood and watched the stage go over the hill." When the news of Shaffer's death came, it proved to be the very night of the dream, that he died. One year and five months later his grandfather died.
