He had many other interests, being president for several years before his death of the First National Bank and a partner in the firm of McCartney & Sutton, which operated the strawboard mill during his lifetime. He was the most prominent spirit among the founders of the State Normal School at Indiana, Pennsylvania, and one of the two largest contributors toward its establishment and support. He was president of the board of trustees of that school from its organization until his death. All worthy public educational project had his interest and support. He was a member and elder of the Indiana Presbyterian Church, and for over a quarter of a century the superintendent of its Sunday school, laboring faithfully for its upbuilding and maintenance.
