He received his education in the public schools of Ludwick, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and after completing his studies there was variously employed until he entered the service of the Westmoreland Grocery Company, in the capacity of shipping clerk, at the beginning of its career. From this position he was raised to the position of buyer. He was a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Second Reformed church.
