Essie E. Bell
Essie E. Bell, 102, of Wilkinsburg and formerly of the Rockland and Emlenton areas died at 11 am Sunday in the Home for Aged Protestant Women in Wilkinsburg.
Born January 2, 1890, in Rockland, she was a daughter of James and Arminta Bailey Bell.
She was a 1907 graduate of Rockland High School and was the oldest surviving member of her class.
Miss Bell continued her education at Penn State University, Columbia University, Edinboro University and the University of Pittsburgh.
She taught in several one-room schools in Venango County including those in the Nickleville, East Home and Emlenton areas.
Miss Bell later was a school teacher in Monongahela and for 22 years taught in the Harmarville public schools. She retired at the age of 68 after teaching 40 years.
She had resided in the Home for Aged Protestant Women in Wilkinsburg since July 30, 1970. Miss Bell was a member of the Mulberry United Presbyterian Church of Wilkinsburg.
Surviving are three nieces, Florence Weaver of Lamartine, Martha Donaldson of Emlenton and Frances King of Pittsburgh and one nephew, James F. Smith of Greenville.
Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were two sisters, Clara King and Genevieve Smith Lillard, and a brother, Marcus E. Bell.
The Robert A. Wolfe Funeral Home in Wilkinsburg is in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the Home for Aged Protestant Women, Wilkinsburg.
