He graduated from the Detroit Central High School, January 24, 1901, and from Westminster College in June, 1904. He won by competitive examination the first appointment from Ohio to the Cecil Rhodes Scholarship in Oxford (England) University. After three years of study and travel abroad he graduated with high honors. He became a student in the United Presbyterian Seminary of Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
