He was born in Ireland and came with his wife and their three children to Baltimore in 1798. They were three months at sea and his property had been confiscated because of the Irish Rebellion. During his life in America, he lived successively in Baltimore, Maryland; Easton, Pennsylvania; Chambersburg, Pennsylvania; and near Salem Church, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where his wife died in 1828 and is buried in Salem Church Cemetery, leaving fifteen children.

He was the first of the family in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He was a native of Ireland, where his first wife, Margaret, was also born. Coming to America they first located east of the mountains in Pennsylvania, and he came from Westmoreland County, where he was a farmer, to Indiana County. He settled near Jacksonville. He was born in Ireland, but came to Pennsylvania in 1798, and spent the remainder of his life in Westmoreland and Indiana counties. He made the passage on a sailing vessel and was three months on the water. [HIC 1913, 1351]
