He was reared in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He began his education in the public schools, graduating with the high school class of 1889 and afterwards attending Washington and Jefferson College. When about 17 years old he began the study of pharmacy and was employed as a clerk in different drug stores of Washington until 1900, when he engaged in the retail drug business for himself. He was a graduate of the Pittsburg College of Pharmacy (later a department of the University of Pittsburg) in the class of 1896.
