General Notes: Husband - Charles Snowden Van Tine
He was educated in the public school, and in early life was a farmer, afterwards operating a ferry across the river, first below Freeport, later ran the ferry across the Allegheny between Venango and Oil City, and also engaged in the oil business. He served four years during the civil war in the Fourteenth Regiment Pennsylvania Cavalry, receiving an honorable discharge at the close of the war.
He came to Pennsylvania in early life [from Dutchess County, New York], operated a ferry at Freeport for many years, but at the time of the oil excitement at Oil City he moved his ferry and poled the river until the first covered bridge was built. He then went to work for Philips & Van Ausdale in Venango County and devoted himself to agricultural pursuits from that time on.
