He was of Scotch-Irish descent. He married and removed to Tyler County, West Virginia, where he bought a tract of land of one hundred and eighty acres. This was heavily wooded, and he acquired considerable wealth from the sale of the timber, in addition to following his trade of coopering. He was the owner of a fine home at the time of his death.
