He was born in Ohio and came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when but six weeks old. He learned the trade of a leather currier and followed it about sixteen years, and was then in the employ of Jones and Laughlin, in the iron business for a number of years, after which he retired. He was of the Roman Catholic faith and in politics was a Democrat.
Later in life he resided with his son, John, in Toledo, Ohio.
