He was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and spent his youthful years there. After his marriage he moved to Beaver County, where he raised stock on one hundred and forty acres of land in Ohio township. He also conducted extensive farming operations on a large adjoining tract of land, which he rented.

He was married twice and was the father of sixteen children.
