He received his rudimentary education in the common schools of his native place, subsequently attending Jefferson College, at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, from which institution he was graduated in 1871. After leaving college he undertook the management of his father's farm of six hundred acres, and achieved notable success in agricultural pursuits, attaining recognition as one of the representative men of his section.
