Another source states that he was born in Beaver County, PA.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was reared and educated in Butler and Beaver counties. In August, 1832, he moved to Butler County from Beaver, and thereafter resided in that county. He was a justice of the peace for ten years, and held most of the other township offices. In politics, he was in early life a Whig, and after the formation of the Republican party he was an adherent of that organization. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
