He farmed for two years after his marriage, then removed to Greenville, PA, and for sixteen years drove a mail line. He had the routes from Greenville to Orangeville, OH, and also to Franklin, PA. In 1862 he went into the grocery business with Samuel West, whom he bought out in less than a year, and then continued alone. He was a member of the Reformed Church, and his wife was a Lutheran. Politically he was a Republican.
