He was born on the old Hillis homestead, situated about one mile east of Youngwood, in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. In the intervals of his duties, which consisted in assisting his father with the running of the farm, he attended the local public schools, where he received the elementary portion of his education and was prepared for college. After graduating from the High School there, he matriculated at Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania, and was graduated from that institution with the class of 1890. He also took a commercial course at the Stratton & Smith Business College of Meadville, and after completing his studies there, spent one year as a teacher in the local public school. The subject which he taught was penmanship. After this experience he spent two years in a clerical capacity in the office of the flour mill at Weavers Old Stand, now known as Hunker, where he was employed by the Sewickley Milling Company, and then passed a similar period in the employ of the Emmenston Furnace & Smelting Company at Youngwood, where he also filled a clerical position. At Youngwood, however, he was very near the old place which his father had operated for so many years and it was naturally his inclination to assist the elder man with this difficult work. This impulse was further accentuated by his own strong fondness for rural life and agricultural tasks. Accordingly, in 1898, he assumed the management of the farm and eventually came into possession of it by his father's gift. The place originally comprised one hundred acres, and Mr. Hillis added eighteen more acres, all of which are kept under a high state of cultivation. He kept a fine herd of Guernsey cattle and in addition to this about fifty sheep of the famous Hampshire breed.
In 1915 Mr. Hillis was appointed road master in the county, and for some years served in that capacity and had charge of about thirty-four miles of road in his district. In politics Mr. Hillis was a Republican, although in no sense of the word a politician.
He found his principal amusement in hunting and spent his vacations in northern Michigan, which
he visited for the purpose of securing the big game of that region. He was also an expert angler and spent much of his time on Lake Gogebic, fishing for pike and pickerel.
Mr. Hillis and his family were members of the Old Baptist Church at Youngwood, and he was a liberal supporter of its various philanthropic undertakings.
