General Notes: Husband - Hon. Frank J. Thomas
He attended the district school and the high school at Cambridge, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and then taught school for three years in Woodcock township. He entered the second preparatory class in Allegheny College in the fall of 1881, and graduated in the classical course in June, 1885. After his graduation he taught school in Woodcockboro, and was for two years principal of the school at Saegerstown, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1885 he registered as a law student with Hon. John J. Henderson, and continued his law studies during his school vacations. Mr. Henderson being elected judge in 1887, Mr. Thomas finished his studies with Hon. H. J. Humes, and was admitted to the bar in May, 1889. Not quite willing to give up his old profession, he accepted a position as principal of schools at Tuscola, Illinois, where he remained three years. He then returned to Meadville, entered into partnership with ex-Senator Humes, and began an active practice of law.
Mr. Thomas was a candidate for district attorney on the Democratic ticket in 1893, and ran ahead of his ticket, but was defeated by a large majority. He was chosen chairman of the Democratic county committee in 1896, and showed himself a good organizer and a shrewd manager. He was nominated by his own party for president judge in June, 1897, was endorsed by the fusion Populists, was elected in November, and entered upon the duties of his office on January 3, 1898.
