He was reared and educated in McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and for twenty years or more was engaged in the grocery line. In 1885 he embarked in the wholesale grocery business in that city, and built up a successful trade.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in politics was an advocate of prohibition.
