He received his education in the common schools. When about twenty-two years of age he assumed the management of the farm which he conducted until his twenty-ninth year. In 1891 he secured a position in the P. H. Laufman sheet mills at Paulton, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he remained one year, and in 1892 engaged in the mercantile business in partnership, with J. H. Beighley, the style of the firm being Yockey & Beighley. They conducted business at Paulton during four years, and in November, 1896, disposed of their interests. In the spring of 1897 Mr. Yockey moved to Vandergrift Heights, erected a commodious business building, as well as a substantial residence, and engaged in the mercantile business by himself, the enterprise proving very successful. He served as first treasurer of the borough of Vandergrift Heights. His political affiliations were with the Democratic party, and he was an elder in the Pine Run Reformed church.
